Festival, Carnival, Beuys
The much anticipated end to disruptive road improvements in the Kings Road shopping area of St Leonards finally ended. This also co-incided with the St Leonards Festival organised by the Gensing & Central St Leonards Community Forum -a cross cultural community day packed with a variety of bands, performances, exhibitions, children’s activities, stalls and a celebratory Carnival. This included a Steel Pan group and Carribbean style performances with costumes on loan from Notting Hill Gate.
The Kings Road pedestrianised pavements are great for both shoppers and visitors and make visiting the business area far more attractive. For regular updates on this please visit the St Leonards Business association website.
At the De La Warr Pavilion an exhibition of renowned artist Joseph Beuys has started, featuring well known pieces; sculptures, drawings, vitrines and selection of posters recalling live actions and events. It was opened by Sir Nicholas Serota, Director of the Tate on 3 July.
An ambition of this exhibition which features work from the 1960’s through to the 1980’s is to prompt inter-generational community discussion, whilst inviting expertise in the fields of philosophy, environment, politics, economics and art. The exhibition finishes on 27 September.
At the f-ish gallery there is an exhibition of photographs by local photographer Martin Everett
Martin is concerned with the investigation of memory, duration and the inhabitance of the ‘on-going moment’. For more information please visit his website. The exhibiiton finishes on 16 August.
